COACH'S CORNER

EP KINGS TOO GOOD FOR EAGLES

The EP Kings beat the SWD Eagles 60-24 at Outeniqua Park on Friday night. This fixture again highlighted that depth in a squad is essential, as the Eagles battled to fill the gaps left by injuries to several key players, none more so than that of captain Wilhelm Koch.
The Eagles remain third on the log, despite the loss.
For the Eagles Elric van Vuuren scored 2 tries and succeeded with 3 conversions and a penalty, making him the top point scorer in the First Division for the season. The other try was score by veteran Connie Botha.

BOLAND BEAT EAGLES

The SWD Eagles suffered their second loss of the Currie Cup by losing to the Boland Cavaliers 49 - 24 (halftime 34 - 10) in Wellington on a cold, wet and miserable Wellington afternoon on Friday.
The Eagles were unable to score a bonus point try and scored 3 tries by Howard Noble and Jeff Taljard (2). All 3 tries were converted by fullback Elric van Vuuren, who also succeeded with a penalty. The injuries suffered the previous week against the Valke clearly had an impact on the team, although a player like Dumisani Msilane had a very good game. The Boland scored 8 very well worked tries.
The Eagles next face the log leaders, EP Kings at Outeniqua Park on Friday 26 August 2011. Kickoff is at 17h00 as the match is broadcast live by Supersport.

EAGLES WIN IN WELKOM

The SWD Eagles continued their winning momentum by beating the Griffons in Welkom on Saturday afternoon by 48 points to 45. The match was played on a cold Free State afternoon on a very hard and dry field. The Eagles scored 7 tries to the 6 of the Griffons, who are under pressure as they are winless in this year's Currie Cup and as a result, threw absolutely everything they had at the Eagles. It was a comfortable win and the score flatters the Griffons somewhat, as the Eagles led by 40 points to 14 and took their foot off the pedal somewhat in the last quarter of the match, a trend the team is working very hard at to rid themselves of. As a result the Griffons scored 2 consolation tries at the death. The Eagles' backline broke the Griffons defence nearly at will and is a force to be reckoned with in the Currie Cup this season.
For the Eagles, the back three of Elric van Vuuren, Howard Noble and Baldwin McBean each scored two tries. The seventh try was scored by lock Hein Potgieter who ran like a wing for 30 metres for a superb try. Van Vuuren was also successful with 5 conversions and 1 penalty and is fast becoming a stand out player for the Eagles.
The Eagles are now third on the log after only 3 games, of which 2 were played away from home.
