COACH'S CORNER

SARU AND SANDF TO INVEST IN SWDRFU'S FUTURE

The South African Rugby Union and the South African National Defence Force, both suitably impressed with the progress made by the SWDRFU and in the professional manner in which the Union is managed and administered, are to heavily invest in the SWDRFU's future. CEO Johan Prinsloo and the President, Hennie Baartman, have worked tirelessly to make sure the SWD gets at least one academy and are very happy that two academies are coming the way of the SWDRFU.
The SANDF are establishing an academy at their Oudtshoorn base. Arrangements are in their final stages and this is a major boost for rugby in the Southern cape.
SARU are similarly in the process of investigating and making logistical plans for an academy in George for the SWDRFU, which will be a professional academy aimed at retaining the union's young talent.
These academies will ensure further growth of rugby in the SWD and will ensure that a team like the under 19's who qualified for the A division for 2011, will not lose most of their team to bigger provinces, as was the case last year.
With the support of SARU and organisations like the SANDF, the Eagles will be a team to watch in future.

EAGLES LOSE DESPITE GREAT COMEBACK

The SWD Eagles lost 45-53 to the Valke in Kempton Park on Saturday, despite a fantastic comeback in the second half. The Valke were leading 32-7 at halftime, but in the second half the Eagles scored 6 tries and if there was another 5 minutes of play, the Eagles would have won the match.
Both sides scored 7 tries, but the Valke succeeded with a drop goal and an extra penalty and conversion to win the match.
The Eagles are fourth on the log and still in the running for a semi-final place and face the Boland Cavaliers at home on Friday in a crunch match. The first division is heading for one of the most exciting last rounds of pool games, with all the teams still technically able to reach the semi-finals.

GRIFFONS BEAT EAGLES

In a very disappointing match for the Eagles, the Griffons ran in deserved victors by 39-27, in a match where the Eagles started very positively and again faded at the end of the match.
The Eagles led by 17-3 after 15 minutes but the Griffons did very well to overtake the Eagles and run in quite easily as winners. The Eagles now lie in 4th position on the log and needs to win at least 1 of their 2 remaining matches to make sure of a semi-final spot.
For the Eagles, Dumisane Meslane, Jeff Taljard and Howard Noble scored tries, which were converted by Elric van Vuuren. Van Vuuren also succeeded with 2 penalties.

EAGLES BEATEN BY BORDER

The SWD Eagles lost to underdogs, the Border Bulldogs in East London on Friday afternoon, 19 - 16. Although the Eagles enjoyed more than 70% possession and territory, they just could not convert the possession into points, in a display that showcased the rustiness caused by the bye the previous weekend. For the Eagles Martin Ferreira scored a try, converted by Elric van Vuuren, who also succeeded with 3 penalties. The Eagles are however still third on the log and are well placed for a semi-final berth.
